THE ECONOMY OF UKRAINE

I am from Ukraine, so, I’d like to tell you about this country.

I can tell you a lot about Ukraine, but I’d like to highlight the economical situation in Ukraine.

Ukraine possesses a considerable economic, industrial and agricultural potential; it has gained a wide and positive experience in such industries as metallurgical, mining, energy production, chemical and metalworking. Grain harvests can be up to 50 million metric tons a year (Ukraine has long been known as “the bread basket of Europe”).

At the same time, Ukraine has inherited from the Soviet Union a malformed and inefficient economic complex and outdated material basis. At present, Ukraine is going through a difficult transitory period.

Structural reforms, particularly in the industrial sphere, are badly needed but they are implemented either too slowly or not at all; industries with the closed cycle of production are insufficient in number; the law system is flawed and because of its imperfections cannot stimulate the growth of the private sector of the economy, or provide conditions necessary for the successful development of small-sized and medium-sized businesses; investments are slow to come.

In the post-soviet period, the gross national product of Ukraine has dropped by 52 percent; the industrial production shrank by 48 percent and the agricultural production was reduced by 51 percent. Unemployment and poverty became major social problems.

All of these factors contribute to the existence of ‘the shadow economy’ which has reached such proportions that now, according to some estimates, about half of the Ukrainian gross national product is produced in the ‘shadow’ sector which employs about 11 million people. Prime ministers who are dismissed practically every year don’t have enough time to work out a workable economical policy. The current government has been in power for too short a time for political and economical analysis to pass any definite judgment on it.

KYIV-PECHERSK LAVRA

We know that Ukraine has rich spiritual, artistic and cultural heritage. Our country is very ancient and every place, town, village has something to see. But just two places stand on the list of UNESCO. These are St. Sophia Cathedral and Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, both the monuments of the 11th century. I’d to mention Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

Lavra means a big monastery. Kyiv Caves Monastery was founded in 1051. The founders of Lavra were St. Anthony and St. Theodosius. Kyiv Caves Monastery is the heart of our native land, the heart of Orthodox Slavdom, the cradle of cultural and Christian spirituality of three fraternal Slavic peoples.

In 2001 the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and all Eastern Orthodoxy celebrated the 950th anniversary of the Lavra’s foundation.

Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra became the center of the religious, political, educational and cultural life of Kievan Rus.

The Monastery has always played a prominent role in the life of the Ukrainian people. Its history, like the history of our nation, knew the periods of prosperity and decline, glory and disregards.

The first hospital, the first printing house, the first historical chronicles, the first paintings started here in Lavra.

In the XVII century Lavra inspired the national liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people against the Polish-Lithuanian occupation.

Of course, the Lavra has been the center of education.

In 1926 Lavra survived the hardest period of its history was closed and turned into a state museum. Monks were exiled. One more tragic event in its history – the Soviet regime destroyed the pearl of Lavra – the Dormition Cathedral (Uspensky Cathedral).

In 1988 the Church was allowed to rent some of the Monastery buildings.

The complex includes 7 churches of the 17-18th centuries. And in 2001 they rebuild the Dormition Cathedral.

People from all parts of the world and Ukraine come and enjoy the beauty of Lavra and feel the joy of being in this holy place.

Saints of the Holy Rus

Ukraine has a lengthy history and originated from a powerful state – Kyiv Rus (Kievan Rus). They called and call our Motherland the Holy Rus. Because the Holy Rus is rich in those glorious and saint people who devoted their lives to the serving to God, the Holy Church, to Motherland and people. They were true patriots of their native land.

Among them are the names of Saint Prince Volodymyr the Great, who introduced Christianity in Rus ( it was in 988); his grandmother St. Princess Olga who was among the first Christians in Rus.

Very venerated are the founders of Kyiv Pechersk Lavra – St. Anthony and St. Theodosius. The opening of this large Monastery was a very great event both for the spiritual and civil life of Rus. These saints are loved by many people, and they were much respected and venerated during their lives by the simple people and by the rich people. Even great princes asked for their wise advice and help, blessing to different good deeds. They healed many people (for free).

Among those who lived in Lavra and wrote the first prima-vitae (life-stories) about the first Rus Saints was St. Nestor the Chronicler. Being a very young man he entered the Monastery and wanted to give his literary talent to the enlightening activity of Lavra. Being so educated, talented he had a very simple life in everything. He wrote the first chronicles of our land, of the Holy Kyiv Rus. Thus he joined the history of our land, of Rus to the history of the whole world. His memorable day is the 26th of October / 9th of November. St. Nestor is St. Patron of students, pupils.

And of course the name of St. Nicolas the Wonder-Worker is famous all around the world. Though St. Nicolas was not born in Ukraine, the Ukrainians, and all the Rus people venerate and love him very much. Because St. Nicolas helps in traveling, in the poverty, in finding work, in healing people. Every person who asks for the help of St. Nicolas receives it rather quickly, even immediately.

A MODERN UKRAINIAN WRITER

Since Ukraine became an independent state, a new period of our national literature began. We can easily buy or borrow in a library books by Ukrainian authors. One of the writers whose creative work was of great importance for Ukrainian literature was N. Hwilovy.

N. Hwilvoy was born in 1893 in the family of village teachers. The boy got his primary education in a gymnasium in Bohoduhov. But his education is the result of his self-study.

Hіs first literary experience was the collection of poems “Youth”, published in 1921. But when in 1923 the collection of stories “Blue etudes” came out, it became clear, that Hwilovy's gift is more prosaic than poetic talent. The book was highly praised by the critics and a deep impression on readers. Hwilovy was called the founder of the new Ukrainian prose.

In his books people live outside their time, in dreams about the ideal future. The romantic ideal came out to be illusory; the aspiration to make everybody happy failed, and instead of harmony they got chaos and ruined life. While reading Hwilovy's stories we feel the longing, for the lost time, for the lost paradise.

The original talent of the young writer made him a recognized leader of literary generation.

In 1925 Hwilovy's article “About the devil in a barrel” began the famous literary discussion of 1925-1928. It had more political than cultural character. Hwilovy stood upon the respectable attitude to the Ukrainian culture, literature and language. But he had to go back on his ideas. The writer couldn't stand it and in 1933 he committed suicide.

4) Tell your friends about other famous or not very famous Ukrainian

TARAS SHEVCHENKO

(March 9, 1814 – 1861)

The Dnieper Wept and Moaned Реве та стогне Дніпр широкий

“Reve ta stohne Dnipr shyroky”

(translated by M. Isakovskyi)

The Dnieper wept and moaned, a piecing Реве та стогне Дніпр широкий,

Wind blew and bent the willows high Сердитий вітер завива,

To very ground, and howling fiercily, Додолу верби гне високі,

Raised foam and billows mountain high. Горами хвилю підійма

A pale moon out the clouds was peeking, І блідий місяць на ту пору

‘Twould sink from sight, then reappear, Із хмари де-де виглядав,

Much like a boat that, refuge seeking, Неначе човен в синім морі

Bobs up and down upon the sea. То виринав, то потопав

Then just fore down, the sound grew muted, Ще треті півні не співали,

No cocks crowed in the wood beside. Ніхто ніде не гомонів,

The stream, the brown owls softy booted Сичі в гаю перекликались

And drying ash trees groaned and sighed. Сичі в гаю перекликались

Та ясен раз у раз скрипів

(Уривок з твору Т.Г. Шевченка “Причинна”, 1837, Петербург)

Protection of environment in Ukraine
Protection of the environment in Ukraine is paid much attention to. The worsening of the ecological situation has been closely linked to the Chernobyl explosion. On April 26, 1986, a fire burnt out of control and released radioactive materials. The disaster killed 31 persons immediately and caused the hospitalization of about 500 others. It has caused widespread illnesses and made the land in the area unusable. A radioactive cloud spread from the plant over most of Europe. Radiation even spread so far as to appear in Asia and in North America. Another issue of concern in Ukraine is the question of where to put nuclear waste. This waste is largely the spent fuel of reactors. It is radioactive, and some of its components remain so forever. The waste is held at temporary sites until a solution of the problem can be found. At present the most promising solution of the problem of waste storage is recycling. Another environmental problem is air pollution.
One of its results is acid rain. It is caused by smoke from factories and transport. Nowadays the emission of smoke is strictly controlled by special governmental agencies. The activity of various environmental organizations helps to improve the situation. Among the leading environmental organizations in Ukraine are the Greenpeace and the Green Party. They are very popular with the youth in Ukraine.

At the Booking Office
“What trains are there to Leeds?”

“There are two through trains at 9 a.m. and 3.20 p.m.”

“How much is a one-way ticket?”

“30 pounds.”

“And return one?”

“55 pounds.”

“Fine. Please give me a return ticket for a 9 o’clock train.”

“All right. What berth would you prefer?”

“Upper one, please.”

“That’s unusual. Everybody asks for the lower berth.”

“Of course, it is much more convenient, but there is always a lady or a child who needs a lower berth, so I prefer an upper one.”
At the Station
“Here you are at last! I’ve been waiting for half an hour for you.”

“I’m sorry, I/m late. But I was stuck in a traffic jam.”

“Here’s your ticket.”

“Oh, thank you. Is it a through train?”

“Yes. I/m glad we shan’t have to change.”

“Fine. When is it due in Edinburgh?”

“According to the timetable we are due there at 9.15 a.m.”

LIVING IN THE CITY

Living in a city has both advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side it is often easier to find work, and there is usually achoice of public transport, so you don't need to own a car. Also there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. For example, you can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, and go to the theatres and to concerts. What is more, when you want to relax, you can usually find a park where you can feed the ducks or just sit on a park bench and read a book. All in all, city life is full of bustle and variety and you need never feel bored.

However, for every plus there is a minus. For one thing, unless your job is very well-paid, you will not be able to afford many of the things that there are to do, because living in a city is often very expensive. It is particularly difficult to find good, cheap accommodation. What is more, public transport is sometimes crowded and dirty, particularly in the

rush hour, and even the parks can be crowded, especially on Sundays when it seems that every city-dweller is looking for some open space and green grass. Last of all, despite all the crowds, it is still possible to feel very lonely in a city.

In a world, I think that city life can be particularly appealing to young people, who like the excitement of the city and don't mind the noise and pollution. However, many people, when they get older, and particularly when they have young children, often prefer the peace and fresh air of the countryside.

Currency

The money used in a country – euros, dollars, yen, etc. – is its currency.

Money in notes (banknotes) and coins is called cash. Most money, however,

consists of bank deposits: money that people and organizations have in bank

accounts. Most of this is on paper – existing in theory only – and only about

ten per cent of it exists in the form of cash in the bank.

Personal finance

All the money a person receives or earns as payment is his or her income.

This can include:

■ a salary: money paid monthly by an employer, or wages: money paid

by the day or the hour, usually received weekly

■ overtime: money received for working extra hours

■ commission: money paid to salespeople and agents – a certain

percentage of the income the employee generates

■ a bonus: extra money given for meeting a target or for good financial

results

■ fees: money paid to professional people such as lawyers and

architects

■ social security: money paid by the government to unemployed and

sick people

■ a pension: money paid by a company or the government to a retired

person.

Salaries and wages are often paid after deductions such as social security

charges and pension contributions.

Amounts of money that people have to spend regularly are outgoings.

These often include:

■ living expenses: money spent on everyday needs such as food, clothes

and public transport

■ bills: requests for the payment of money owed for services such as

electricity, gas and telephone connections 19

■ rent: the money paid for the use of a house or flat

■ a mortgage: repayments of money borrowed to buy a house or flat

■ health insurance: financial protection against medical expenses for

sickness or accidental injuries

■ tax: money paid to finance government spending.

A financial plan, showing how much money a person or organization

expects to earn and spend is called a budget.

Planned monthly budget for next year (€)

Telephone etiquette

The techniques of telephoning are very much the same in all countries. Only remember your good telephoning manners.

  1. When talking on the telephone – speak clearly. Do not shout and take your cigarette out of your mouth.

  2. Make sure that your conversation with a busy person is as brief as possible.

  3. When calling a friend who does not recognize your voice – don’t play

“Guess who”. Announce yourself promptly.

  1. When you get a wrong number don’t ask “What number is this?”. It is good manners to ask “Is this two-three-four-five-six?” If not – apologize.

  2. If a wrong number call comes through don’t lose your temper. Simply say: “Sorry, wrong number” – and hang up.

  3. Always identify yourself when making a call, especially if you are calling on business, e.g. : “This is Mr. Petrenko of the Ukrainian Golden Telecom . Could I speak to Mr. Siemens…”

  4. If you have a visitor, do not carry on a long chat while your visitor tries hard to avoid listening to your conversation. The best thing to do is to say you are busy at the moment and … May I call you back in a little while?”. But don’t forget to do so.

3. Read the dialogue. Which polite (ввічливий) phrases do they use in the dialogue?
