I. V. KURCHATOV (1903-1960)

Kurchatov, a highly distinguished Soviet scientist, played a leading part in the development of science of atom. Born in 1903 in Eastern Russia, in the Urals, Kurchatov graduated from the University in 1923 and started research at the Leningrad Physico-Technical Institute. From 1925 up to 1933 he carried out experimental and theoretical studies of dielectrics. He was the first to give a mathematical theory of ferro-electrisiti. His researches of this subject were summarized in a book published in 1933. Other work at this time included studies of dielectric breakdown.

Kurchatov's work in nuclear physics began in 1933, and in 1938 he was made director of nuclear physics research at the Leningrad Institute, where he and collaborators conducted many researches into nuclear reaction produced by neutrons. His researches also dealed with detailed studies of the scattering and absorption of neutrons in water, paraffin and other moderating media. In 1941 he published a paper surveyingvariors possible ways of developing a chain reacting system based on thermal neutrons fission of heavy elements.

At the Atomic Energy Institute Kurchatov conducted fundamental researches on atomic energy.

In recent years the problems of plasma physics and controlled thermonuclear reactions formed a significant part of Kurchatov's work. The enormous magnetic rap installation for obtaining and studying high- temperature plasms was constructed. The first Soviet nuclear reactor was also constructed under Kurchatov's guidance and with his direct participation.

ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION

As early as 1831 Faraday discovered the law of electromagnetic induction. It reads that in a conductor crossing the magnetic field the electromagnetic force is induced.

This conductor being connected in a circuit the electrical current will flow through it. The concentric magnetic fields arise around the current - carrying conductor. The direction of magnetic flux of these fields can be determined a according to the corkscrew rule, which states that if the current through straight conductor is in the same direction as the bodily motion of a corkscrew, then the direction in which the handle of the corkscrew has to be rotated shows the direction of the circular lines of force.

There is another way of determining a current-carrying conductor, the flux will encircle the conductor in the direction of the fingers when the thumb points in the direction of the current flow.

In the case of solenoid the second relation exists between then flux and current in a coil: with the right hand grasping the coil and the fingers pointing in the direction of current flow, the thumb will point in the direction of the flux inside the coil.

This correlation makes possible to control providing South and North poles of electromagnet depending on proper placing the coil onto the core.

NEWTON'S GREAT DISCOVERY

Newton's great discovery was the law of decomposition of light. The scientist proved that the white light of the sun is compounded of rays of light of all the colors of the rainbow.

Among the things he discovered in those productive years was the Law of Universal Gravitation.

Curiously enough, Newton published nothing on these three highly significant discoveries; he began writing his "Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy" much later, under pressure of his friends. The fundamental principle of the book is that "every particle of matter is attracted by eveiy other particle of matter with a force inversely proportional to the square of their distances apart". There were also given the laws governing the problems of bodies colliding with each other.

Newton applied the principle of gravitation to prove that the power which guides the moon around the earth and the planets around the sun is the force of gravity. The fact that the earth is flattening at the poles because of rotation was explained, and the amount of flattening was calculated. Another application of the law of universal gravitation was Newton's exploration of the tides.

Most highly honored by his countrymen (he was elected President of the Royal Society in 1703), Newton, was very modest, about himself he wrote "I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, while the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me".

LIVESTOCK BREEDING
Much is to be done to enlarge the fodder resources for livestock breeding. Feeds are very important for effective development of the branch. It is planned to increase the output of mixed feeds, which are special interest for animal breeders.

For the production of feeds provision is made for the large-scale use of improved lands and for enlarging the area sown to protein-rich crops. Moreover, attention must be paid to enhancing the productivity of natural hayfields, which can be doubled or even trebled with relatively small outlays. Another major orientation in the promotion of industrial technology for the output of livestock breeding farms through their reconstruction.

Livestock production in Ukraine has a meat and dairy orientation of which the main subdirectories are cattle and pig raising.

The livestock productivity has sharply fallen lately resulting in decrease of the average annual milking per cow, the average weight per one cattle head to the state procurement system, the average weight per one pig and the average annual egg production per one poultry head.

The aim of our policy is to turn livestock breeding into a highly efficient and highly productive branch of the national economy and to make considerable headway in further reducing the difference between the conditions of life in town and countryside.

HRYVNIA – THE OFFICIAL CURRENCY OF UKRAINE
Hryvnia was introduced on September 2, 1996, right after the celebration of Ukraine Independence Day. It replaced the old “Coupon” (or “Karbovanets”) which was a temporary bill in Ukraine for the period it was leaving the rouble zone. Old coupons were changed a fixed rate 100 000 coupons for 1 Hryvnia since September 15 and now it is the only legal tender in Ukraine.

There are bills for 1,2,5,10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Hryvnias. There are also “kopiyka” for 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50kopiykas (1 kopiyka is equal to1/100 of Hryvnia) and one Hryvnia.

Bills of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 Hryvnias marked with year 1992 were designed and printed in Canada. Bills of 1 Hryvnia (alternative design), 50, 100, 200 and 500 Hryvnias were designed and printed already in Ukraine in 1994.

Hryvnia can be freely converted to hard currency in any authorized bank or exchange point. During the last period it proved to be a stable and reliable currency.

There are several protection layers in Hryvnia bills. In addition, bills of 50, 100, 200 and 500 Hryvnias and partially 1 Hryvnia (alternative design) have addition protection levels to ensure their safety.

Every year the National Bank of Ukraine releases the new design of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 Hryvnia bills to increase their protection from falsification.

MY FUTURE PROFESSION
There are many interesting and useful professions and it is really not an easy task to choose the right one.

I began to think about my future profession at the age 15. my favourite subjects at school were mathematics and English. My teachers were well-educated people with broad outlook and deep knowledge of the subjects. They encouraged me in my desire to become an economist. Now I know well what I’m going to do after leaving school. I didn’t make a blind choice. It was not a sudden flash either. I opted for a career in business economics. I came to this decision little by little. It was my father who aroused my interest in that field. You see, he is a chief economist at a large plant and I often saw him work at home and discuss business matters with his colleagues. Later I got interested in the matter.

Economics is the science of making choices, which is based upon the facts of our everyday life. Economists study our everyday life and the system, which affects it. They try to describe the facts of the economy in which we live and to explain how the system works. The science of economics is concerned with all our material needs and wants.

To become a good specialist in economic matters and business one must know many sciences, such as business economics, finance and credits, statistics, history of economic management, trade business and, of course, marketing, which s a modern philosophy of business.

It is very important for a specialist in business matters to be a skilful user of computers and to speak at least one foreign language. It should better be English as it is the most popular language of international business communication. You’ll be able to follow business developments in the world by listening to radio and TV news, by reading newspapers or magazines, or by getting in contact with your business partners abroad.

If I pass my entrance exams successfully and enter the University I’ll try to study to the best of my abilities to achieve my life’s ambition and to justify the hopes of my parents. I also hope that I’ll never regret my choice and get an interesting and a well-paid job afterwards.

Maybe I should consider a job in a world of banking. There’s a surprisingly wide range to choose from, in the financial world. For example, I could work for a big international company, run my own company, write about economics as a financial journalist, run my own International Business Research Agency, raise money for charities or just sell famous paintings…
